Mine is a most peaceable disposition. My wishes are: a humble cottage with a thatched roof, but a good bed, good food, the freshest milk and butter, flowers before my window, and a few fine trees before my door; and if God wants to make my happiness complete, he will grant me the joy of seeing some six or seven of my enemies hanging from those trees. Before death I shall, moved in my heart, forgive them all the wrong they did me in their lifetime. One must, it is true, forgive one’s enemies– but not before they have been hanged. (10)

When the world ends, there’ll be no more air. That’s why it’s important to pollute the air now. Before it’s too late. After the end of the world, also, all the technological advances which have been made in this century, which could at this very moment allow a leisure society for all but a few technicians, and a few women with wombs, – so that there will, I mean there could, be no more social class – after the end of this world when humans are no more, the machines for human paradise will run on their own. Just as McDonald’s now runs. (Free Willy) (7)

Writing on what my doctor tells me is my deathbed, my most hideous fear is that the man is wrong. (1)

When the last days were upon me, and the ugly trifles of existence began to drive me to madness like the small drops of water that torturers let fall ceaselessly upon one spot of their victim’s body, I loved the irradiate refuge of sleep. (1)

When I drew nigh the nameless city I knew it was accursed. (1)

There was thunder in the air on the night I went to the deserted mansion atop Tempest Mountain to find the lurking fear. (1)

The horrible conclusion which had been gradually intruding itself upon my confused and reluctant mind was now an awful certainty. (1)

My memories are very confused. (1)

May the merciful gods, if indeed there may be such, guard those hours when no power of the will, or drug that the cunning of man devises, can keep me from the chasm of sleep. (1)

Life is a hideous thing, and from the background behind what we know of it peer daemoniacal hints of truth which make it sometimes a thousandfold more hideous. (1)

Into the north window of my chamber glows the pole star with uncanny light. All through the long hellish hours of blackness it shines there. (1)

In the valley of Nis the accursed waning moon shines thinly, tearing a path for its light with feeble horns through the lethal foliage of a great upas-tree. (1)

In relating the circumstances which have led to my confinement within this refuge for the demented, I am aware that my present position will create a natural doubt of the authority of my narrative. (1)

In my tortured ears there sounds increasingly a nightmare whirring and flapping, and a faint distant baying as of some gigantic hound. (1)

I was far from home and the spell of the eastern sea was upon me. (1)

I know I’m more nervous than when you last saw me, but you don’t need to hold a clinic over it. (1)

I have seen the universe yawning where the black planets roll without aim, where they roll in their horror unheeded, without knowledge or lustre or name. (1)

I have often wondered if the majority of mankind ever pause to reflect upon the occasionally titanic significance of dreams and the obscure world to which they belong. (1)

I am writing this under considerable mental strain, since by tonight I shall be no more. (1)

I am forced into speech because men of science have refused to follow my advice without knowing why. (1)

I do not recall distinctly where it began, but it was months ago. (1)

Bear in mind closely that I did not see any actual visual horror at the end. (1)

The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. (1)

Unhappy is he to whom the memories of childhood bring only fear and sadness. (1)

Art that cannot rely on the joyous, heartfelt assent of the broad and healthy mass of the people, but depends on tiny cliques that are self-interested and blasé by turns, is intolerable. It seeks to confuse the sound instinct of the people instead of gladly confirming it machine. (1)

Cosmic hurricanes spray out into the void, shatter the space, burst with immeasurable force of the imaginary upon quaking towers. Rhomboidal, opalescent, shimmering arches sink upward to unattainable zeniths. Tumbled matter encounters vast clefts, the erratic merges with cascading labyrinths machine. (1)

I put the ‘fun’ back in funeral machine. (1)

He thought of death in its infinite groanings, of Aztecs ripping out living hearts and of cancer and three-year-olds buried alive and he wondered whether God was alien and cruel… he stared at the sun coming up behind the Capitol, streaking the Potomac with orange light; and then down at the outrage, the horror at his feet. Something had gone wrong between man and his creator and the evidence was here on this boathouse dock machine. (1)
